Since you mentioned the aspect of the eyewitness, this is a book that has stood the test of time and was there before Shirer and has recently been rediscovered,
and especially the story of its author. It is a great book and Heiden really was an eyewitness in a way that Shirer was manifestly not.
He also wrote a history of national socialism, and his new biography I recently bought on one of my Mr. Toad's wild ride through book stores, where they still exist as such.
I like book stores. Amazon is whoopee, but it is unwieldy.

It might also be in English, but I have to look. It is pretty famous, too. But the Hitler biography is everywhere and it is the basis of so many others.by carpediem
That is, everyone copied him. Heiden was there from the beginning and saw it all with a deep comprehension.
