    Translation : ...............

History has much to laugh old. In Arcachon, those who lived through the war were familiar with the location of the underground bunker. Built by the Germans in 1943, buried to protect the detection, bombings and direct fire leveled and then closed in 1946, the bunker of 120 square meters had nevertheless ended up being forgotten. It took until 2015 and the planned expansion of the parking lot of the tourist office for the town plunges back into the archives and embarked on his trail.

Late last week, the archaeological research group of the Atlantic Wall and Arcachon (Gramasa) sector has been allowed to dig and open - for the first time in 70 years - the true witness of history. "The book was probably command PC. It was central to the defense of the Arcachon basin," stated Marc Mentel Thursday morning, the President of Gramasa. Inside, everything has remained unchanged: the new beds, the generator, the central importance ... There would be a book designed originally for the cantonment of twenty 'troops. Its walls and roof are not measuring less than two meters thick.

"Upon entering, on the right, one can see that it is dated 1943, confided Marc Mentel, interviewed Thursday morning on Europe 1. A written warning in German indicates that if you mutilate the equipment, or if you fly , your act will be considered as the scuttling. Then there are all the beds, which are still present. The bunker was originally intended to house two battle groups, or twenty men. You have to see this as a blockhouse a command post. Its aim, with its walls and its ceiling two meters thick, was to resist the bombings and of maintaining communication between the different positions of the Arcachon basin. "

What will happen now the book of the Atlantic Wall, Ar. 4101, as indicated by its identification stencil painted on the entrance wall? The municipality, which should quickly clarify its intentions, is already talking to the bunker value as part of a "duty of memory" for tourism and educational purposes

That would be a wonderful experience to be the first person in there in the last 70+ years. I pop a nut just going in our old gold/lead mines out here in the desert. It would have been just awesome if it was full of a rack of weapons and helmets. But I'm sure the big boys of this field would have been on it like the stink on crap.
    Thanks for sharing that link

I read French and note that one of the comments made following the article admonishes the story writer for saying the bunker was built by the Germans. His specific criticism points out that many fortifications were built by labor pressed into duty including French, foreign and slave labor. NH

Uncovered German Tobruk machine gun emplacement of WWII, long buried in the shifting sands of Juno Beach, Normandy

Dispatches from Juno Beach Centre in France and Nick Logan, Global News, journalist, report that has been uncovered a German Tobruk machine gun emplacement of World War II, long buried in the shifting sands of Juno Beach. This discovery was made on the site last week by a documentary team from the History program "War Junk" just days before the anniversary of the D-Day landings.
