Full military honours were granted by the Luftwaffe at the funerals of RAF Sergeants Butlin and Holden who were shot down over Jersey in 1943.
They took off on an operation to Frankfurt from RAF Burn in Yorkshire and ditched 3 miles south west of the Channel islands.

A friend of mine has his great uncles diary which he kept while a POW of the Germans. It is full of drawings of camp life, programmes for concerts and the like. There are a few photographs of the funeral of one of the prisoners. The camp commandant provided a guard of honour and a salute was fired over the grave. I am hoping to be allowed to scan all the material into my computer with a view to perhaps writing this quite remarkable story. I have never seen a POW collection like it. But those images of the funeral are really something again!

Fighter Pilots are a different breed of people...that have held their adversaries talents in high esteem..giving them much honor and respect. The Fighter pilots of the Luftwaffe..never associated themselves with the ruthlessness of the SS. Nice to see these photos of humanity. Regards Larry
