I dont get far when running with Vodka in the system... LOL
You would be amazed at what your body can accomplish when you add fear and adrenalin to the equation although I would never advise to drink large quanties of alcohol if faced with a combat situation a stiff shot certainly helps.
As said before, whatever you can get your hands on.

Re: What would they drink?
An interesting thread....
The Brits loved Booths London gin, I've dug loads of the bottles from numerous WW2 sites including Army camps, Airfields even European battlefields. The Brits also drank fizzy Tizzer again dug loads of the bottles from WW2 sites.
It's good to see the first mention of Coca Cola, it seems where ever US personel were based the Cola followed.
Remember that Coke Cola was also popular in pre war Germany but due to shortages of the syrup getting through the production was shut down during hostilities and replaced by Fanta this remained popular with the people. After the war the German Fanta company merged back with it's parent company Coca Cola.

Lots of tales of various types of booze being had in all theaters
over there. For example, I've read that the Italians sold
some horrible concoctions to American GI's.
Two of my favourite war-time cartoons from Bill Mauldin:
"Go tell th' boys to line up Joe, we got fruit juice fer breakfast.........!"
"Don't startle 'im Joe - it's almost full.........!"
I wonder if Mauldin was with my friend that served in the ETO... he said that they came up to a barrel of wine in France and one of the men in his squad shot a hole it and filled his helmet and let the rest run into the river that others did not take...
Im sure this happened more than once though!
