Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

Dimas,
Thanks for the photos and for reminding us of the anniversary of that horrible war.
In the light of the actual situation in Afghanistan, one wonders why we don´t seem to be capable of learning the lessons of our recent history. And thus it tends to repeat itself over and over again.

Gus

re: Afganistan Campaign end - 15 February 1989 year .
What is interesting is that the British fought in the Anglo-Afghan wars of (1839–42, 1878–80, and lastly in 1919) which saw British occupation of Afghanistan.
The whole point of these wars.....asserting influence in central Asia and in "The great game" between the Russian and British Empires.

So alot of this talk about recent past has been going on in Afghanistan for over a hundred years on and off.

For those of you who haven't seen much info about the current fighting in Afghanistan Here is a link which shows what we see on the news on a daily basis in the UK about the fighting in Southern Afghanistan,
YouTube - 16 Air Assault Brigade - Afghan Offensive
The second link is how the boys from 3 Para Battlegroup saw their Tour to Afghanistan in 2006.
YouTube - LEST WE FORGET - British Armed Forces In Afghan Remembered
Not much has changed since those young Russian boys were there 20 years ago
