Some further scans now I have the armband to hand The center band is a dark green felt like material.

The wording is; Forstverwaltung exists so Forest Administration or Forestry Commission. I wonder why a Police of Forestry Commission?

I think the third reich had a Forestry Commission or Forest Administration, which was responsible for hunting, logging, ...
Perhaps the Soviet authorities have kept this organization ?
For the cuff, I think it is not Soviet manufacture, as in the words, we find the letter 'i' is a letter that is not found in the alpahabet Cyrillic.

What about something like a Game Warden? I can believe that in the months after the end of the war, that starvation would have made pooching a big problem.

A friend of mine pointed out the unusual use of the Yat or jat (Ѣ, ѣ) character on the armband. The Yat was the thirty-second letter of the old Cyrillic alphabet. What makes this usage unusual is the Yat letter was dropped in a series of orthographic reforms: in Serbian with the reform of Vuk Karadžić, in Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian roughly with the October revolution, and in Bulgarian and Rusyn as late as 1945.



The conundrum is why would this Yat character of pre-revolutionary Russia have been used at this date assuming late WWII or early post-war Soviet occupied Germany?

However member Philippe mentioned in an earlier post the language could be Belarusian (White Ruthenian or Rus or Rusyn) which would tie in with the "yat" character still being in use in 1945. So further question is what Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR) component was there in the Red Army during WWII?
