Is anyone willing to help with this one, am I missing anything that is an obvious no go?
    What I can see:
    Remnants of two decals.
All font looks consistent with other examples I have observed.
    ET68
    Lot # 5057
The rolled rim looks consistent with tool markings.
The liner is welded and polished in the front with a 68 marking on the rear.
I am no expert and would appreciate any insight.

Trying to figure out what I am looking at. Looks like a folded edge on the front rim of the helmet. What is that ? Is it an illusion or a shadow from the lighting ?
The lot# according to reference would put the date of production 1940-41. A bit late for a Nat. colors decal.

That's about all I can say

Thank you Sir for the information! Would you direct me to where I can find information on lot numbers and how they correlate to years of manufacturing for the m38 please? I've found the information on the german helmet vault but nothing pertaining specifically to m38 numbers. Thank you for your time.

My reference book is "German Helmets, a modern study" written by Ken Niewiarowicz. The book was printed in 2009...it's discontinued but copies can be found.
M38 lot#'s are quite similar in sequence as M35,40,42 ET produced helmets. One can more or less follow the same guidelines as far as date of manufacture with the observed lot#

I decided to go ahead and buy this one and overall I'm extremely pleased. The seller reported that it was found in 1995 near Leningrad. Remnants of the original light green paint are there along with a small amount of a darker green in various places. The decals are nothing more than ghosts at this point. I will take the liner out for pictures of the markings in the future.
