Probably ex-yugo spiced up with a "bird" :-)
Looking for following WWII German items:
    - anything dealing with Allenstein (Olsztyn) and Wehrkreis I in East Prussia,
    - entrenching tool carrier (straight and folding),
    - forestry and hunting items,

Every Yugo can I have seen has the end panels folded over and spot-welded?

They made and reused them so you can either get yugo or german made one.

What I mean is that Yugoslavia made their own copy and used captured pieces as well. Your box can still be from Yugoslavia and be German made.
Why would anybody paint that box unless it had the typical Yugo green paint. This is my opinion only.

Here are the 2 cans I now have, the left one is steel, the right is aluminum, the aluminum one is dated 1939,there is too much paint on the steel one to read the markings.....Pete.
