    Hello,
beyond the problem of the front edge, there are other features that allow to recognize a german from a dutch tool, like the shape of the blade or the shape of the three grooves on the blade...
This folding shovel is WWII german, no problem with it.
I've seen german tools that had the front edge at different angles, from very pronounced to barely visible...but dutch ones are always flat...
    Thanks

    Thankyou all,
This has been most informative - I know what features to look for and what not to worry about. That is why I joined this forum - to learn!

Aha... Now I undestand what the question was about Yes, the spade stick out a little bit when it is folded. Here are some new pictures. The single one is the spade I started the thread with.

I was not aware of diffrences in front edges, so thank you for reopening the tread Danmark
Well, since my folding shovels were out to day, I took some extra photos.
The right one is my last arrival in the E-tool front. Carrier made of ersatz leather, and spade marked Bovo 41. Hope you like it

Thank you again for the wonderful photos of your klappspaten.
I attach a photo I was sent that shows one with a front edge that looks very straight to me - and this is what most people tell me separates the post war Dutch from the reissued Norwegian shovels - additionally JPhilip says the ribs on the blade are sharper on the German than the Dutch ... something that only a side view ( or end view plus measurements can tell )
Also the common view seems to be the blade width - 150mm for the German & 157mm for the Dutch
So can we summarise this way ......

    German
Angled edge ( a little or a lot but blade closes pointing away from handle )
    Sharp ridges to blade
Blued or Black painted finish ( under all over Norwegian green! )
    150mm blade width

    Dutch
No angle at all ( so the blade closes touching the handle )
shallow & wider ridges to blade
Olive green ( or similar ) painted finish ( handle unpainted )
    157mm blade width

Any other features to watch for?
