Hi Luis, no, this info came from what was printed on the paper label you showed here in the cannister lid. I have borrowed and cropped your pic, so see below.
What you have is:
The soldiers surname of: Benecke
His unit Feldpost number: L51846 (Luftwaffe numbers have a "L" prefix)
His Gas mask size, which is 1.
His roll number: 225
The key peice of info is the Feldpost number. I have a database of these. Once you know the unit, it is easy then to research where they fought.
His roll number of 225 (similar to a US/British serial number but NOT the same thing) really gives no info. This number was stampted on his dog tag too and entered in his paybook. The German Army gave you a number when you joined up. Each unit had a roll book and his name was entered at position number 225 in that book.
Hope this explains things for you?
Cheers, Ade.
Hello Adrian & Luis,
In this case i'm afraid the number 225 is not the roll number given to each soldier in his unit. Gasmask sets were not like the vast majority of the other equipments that was issued at the clothing depot. They did belong to the unit, and the number is the issueing number. It means that your set Luis was the 225th issued within the 10. Kompanie of Luftnachrichten-Regiment 42...
Also...sorry for the bad news, but your carrying strap is postwar Bundeswehr...
thanks
