I always thought that these flags were used for marking areas with dangerous gas, but recently somebody told me that they were used for marking areas with mines. Is this correct? I always thought that the mined areas were marked by signs, not flags.
Mine marking kits had a carrier and a number of small penent type flags, such as this, used to mark individual mines. I'm not familair as to what all the flags looked like however so I could not tell you for sure if this is a mine marker or not....sure looks like one though. It will be interesting to learn more when others chime in.
Mine markers I think are usually a straight pole, not real long, with a red or orange penant. They had to be small enough to fit into the carrier and no need to be large as they marked a very localized threat. I don't think what you have is a mine marker flag based on that.
And two more images from the same source, MP44_Tom, who I hope will not mind them being used. If the mods think this is not acceptable, will they please delete, though I am only posting these for research purposes, and they are already available on the net.
