German Canteen? CNL 39

Hey guys, I got this as a kid a long time ago and I now do WW2 reenacting and was wondering if this is actually a German canteen? I have never found any research on German canteen codes on the net, Only Kar98k maker marks and such as that. But I would love to be able to know if this is in fact a real one. the makers mark is "CNL 39" Appears to be in the right area and right form of canteen. But my knowledge doesn't go as far as canteens only Mess kits and other stuff for mess items. Sorry I was not able to get a better photo of the Makers mark, it is kind of wore out due to age.

The canteen is period ok, the marking is actually GNL.
