    It does look like a gas mask cannister/carrier. However there arent any attachment points on the exterior for the straps, apart from the handle on the top. The inside is also very different compared to gas mask cannisters that I've seen. I have an idea about what the pins could be for though, maybe its to hold some sort of liner to help protect whatever the cannister was designed to carry? Could it have been used to carry something explosive like a shell or something similiar?

    jarok34 could be right about the container for this type of canon..
    I've searched the internet and came across a few foto's viewing this type of cannister for the ammo af a 21cm Mörser.
