I'm rather interested... What determines the number that troops (apparently) field apply to the side of the canister and the filter? On this one it's '425'
Hello,
Gasmasks did not belong to soldiers, they belonged to the unit. When a soldier left an unit, he also left behind the Gasmask set. The number 425 means that this Gasmask set was the 425th set issued within the unit. This number and the mask size are written down in the military papers.
Thanks

Nice set the gas cape bag might be one of the Atf (At the Front) reanactor's site he had a bunch of original bags here while back that had rusted snaps on them and it states he replaced them with new snaps that might explain the snaps. timothy
I bought this off a person who was a reenactor. So very possible thanks!

You and me both! No idea myself!

One of the reasons I asked is because I read that the number on the side was from the serial number in the Soldbuch: Personal Markings on Gas Masks & Canisters / der Erste Zug
edit: I think I misread it. This number was entered INTO the Soldbuch, not from the Soldbuch.
