    Don't think its a saddle strap as I have a complete Heer saddle with saddle bags,sword hanger ,reins ,etc - Almost looks as if it has a belt catch attached.

    Have checked all my saddle reference books and they don't show this type of connection -could be a home made/battlefield strap-

    Hi

    This is a part of the so called "Deckengurt" , the strap used to secure a blanket to the horse.... so it is definitely cavalry related

    Here a picture of a complete one (picture is from website project 1944)
