Hi. It looks like a German vehicle box, almost like a motorcycle side box. Nice thing to have, forsure.

No, Seb, you're not blind. But there were different types of boxes used. Photo is just an example. Your box is the right shape and size for a motorcycle sidebox, with the three top holes and single bottom hole. But, frankly, it could have come from any number of German vehicles. The first thought I had was it looked like one of the tool / equipment boxes found on German half-tracked AA gun carriers. But I would guess that motorcycle box is about right. A lot of the photos you see of German motorcycles / sidecars tend to be early war period. Your box is dated '44', late war pattern.

I agree with Alexander. I have seen motorcycle courier boxes exactly like yours. The only difference was the ones I saw did not have the the stamped re-enforcement on them. It could be the ones I saw were earlier bags and by 1944 they figured out they needed to re-enforce them. Yours matches the smaller size used by motorcycle couriers and it's got the hasp so they can put a lock on it for confidential documents. Wouldn't be logical to put a lock on an ammo box, or tools you might need in a fire fight.

    Take care,
    Jay
