I've always found this a sad but intriguing photo.

I concur. And as you write, there is a high probability, that he had a grenade lobbed at him.

..... but without eyewitness facts, we have only the LIFE correspondent's captioning to go by.

Bottom line is that he might have done something to cause others to finish him off like that and there are most likely several mourning families left behind no matter their country, creed or allegiance.
