Default Mess Kit - Unknown type

    Hey guys,

Need a bit of help here. Picked this up today and not sure what it is.

I've had a long standing hole in my collection for an M31. While I used to see them all the time at the local shows, I rarely come across them.

While not in the condition I was looking for I took a chance on this as it has a return gty and intrigued me as I was not sure what it was.

There are no markings at all on this kit and is made from aluminum

The paint (what's left) is black. There is no other paint underneath.

There is a name carved in two places (bottom and under the handle) It is "Karmann"

Did my best with the photos. I was a bright sunny and cold day outside (16 degress F)

The handle as two "fixed" loops for straps. Unlike the M31 which as one sliding loop.

    Any and all comments welcome.

Thanks, will look into further. Looked different than the supposed ww1 supposed examples I saw. Will admit, I didn't do much research first before I posted......

They did continue to use these during WWII so I wouldn't be disappointed if you were looking for a WWII used one.

While I need a WWII to fill that "hole" I knew when I bought this that it was most likely not, so not disappointed. Just have to decide to keep it or return it.

Think I will keep it. I just looked at a few minty examples going for close to $200, I think the $40 I paid for it was good despite the missing paint.

    Thanks everyone for the help!

The missing paint gives it character, it's likely served more than one shivering Soldat his Erbseneintopf on a cold night in a hole somewhere, lol...
I come across mess-kits at low prices on German Ebay.de ...Canteens as well...
    cheers, Glenn

Yeah, I too like the look! So I'm happy with it as well. A little more paint would be nice but hey, no problems here.

I don't actively look for the M31's hence the long standing hole...but one day I'll get one.

Nice kit I have one almost identical to it it looks like yours shown a WW1 style m10 that continued on in use and service in the Weimar and WW2 you can see period pictures of this style being used in the early days of Russia to me these are much harder to locate that the m31 standard ww2 ones. timothy
