Did NCOs carry a map case?

As far as i know not according to regulations, but i am sure some did. Far from everything went according to rules and regulations.

loads of original pics of nco's wearing a map case, german military doctrine ensured that the senior NCO would pick up the command of the group if the officer was out of action or if killed during the assault, this I believe was a format used from the stormtroop days of WW1. Based on this principle why not carry a map case if required !

As lars said in the field regulations play second fiddle to practicalities.
