What do you think about that idea? I kinda want them displayed out rather than being inside the cannister. Or maybe plastic heads. Will something happen to them?

Hi , would not bother as the elastic/rubber will be stretched over time, keep them in their cannisters. Also I would not be to keen on putting a vintage gas mask on my mug anymore since I learnt they have asbestos in the filters!! Leon.

Styrofoam is a big no-no when it comes to displaying either gas masks or leather flying helmets as it gives off a gas and other vapours that can chemically damage them.......Apparently.

    Properly Displaying Gas Masks?

Glass display heads are recommended, although they are of course more expensive.

I put mine on smaller than sized old wooden hat forms..they still look ok, and it does not hurt them as the old wooden hat form breath...the masks are not "hard fitting, so they sit on the shelf, but the backs are on the form.

One of mine shown in the photos

Defo avoid polystyrene...'made that mistake myself with tank crew lids and masks...they LOOK great....but they don't come off too well (if at all) and they're stretched

I have made a head size ball out of the kind of tissue that comes as packing in shirts etc:

Or you could try what I have done (much to the annoyance of my Wife) to display a steel helmet on the book shelf :

I tell her it's Yin and Yang.
