I've got a binocular and telescope expert lined up to restore the lenses in my uboat binoculars he says the cement has gave in and is blocking and is distorting the image. My question is like as goes for much collectables, would restoring the binoculars hurt the collectable value or increase it? He is giving me a really good rate for fixing it ($250) because he is impressed By my interest at such a young age. So the question is, to restore or not to restore the lenses.

    All the best,
    Stefan

Hi Stefan, I don't think it will hurt the value.

You will get more enjoyment out of them if you could use them.

    Cheers, Ade.

Ok thanks for the help Ade, that is what I'll do with them then, since i have so much room on value it seems only right that i make the optics better than i received them.

    All the best,
    Stefan

$250 to restore a pair of binoculars? It is supposed to be that expensive?

Well the guy say that first of all not many people know how to take these appart and maintain them properly and second is because they are sealed rather well, so well in fact its going to take him weeks until he finally opens them using a chemical compound to gradually work at the sealant. Once they are open the actual work is pretty quick and then he reseals them. He said he would usually charge somewhere from 700-900. I have confindence in him though because someone else trusted him with a pair of optics costal artillery optics that he also had in store. Just so you guys know

    all the best,
    Stefan

That's insane! Hopefully he will do a good job. I say if you have the money, and if you are willing to spend that much for it, then go for it.

removing lenses and maintaining colmination in the finished product takes some care and isn't a simple take apart, wipe down and put back together. As with anything, he could f them up in the process, but if he is competent, this does not seem to hurt the value and seems to increase its value if done well. everybody likes a clean clear view!

The first thing most people would do whn picking up binos would be to try and look through them! So if they work, they'll be a lot more useful
