Article about: Found this last weekend at the fairgrounds military show. It came with the carry strap. Another dealer at the show said this style of strap was for the bed roll? I wasn't too sure about him.

Found this last weekend at the fairgrounds military show. It came with the carry strap. Another dealer at the show said this style of strap was for the bed roll? I wasn't too sure about him. The canteen I've had for awhile, the leather isn't completely stiff, but I'm leery of undoing it.

    Hi

The dealer was correct... the strap you show is a so called "Mantelriemen" (the straps used to put the great coat and/or blanket to the tornister. These straps are also used to strap the Zelt to the belt (when no A-Frame is used, especially at the beginning of war, when Y straps and A-frames were not widely used) )

A normal Mess kit strap has 8 holes relatively close to each other, and no extra strap with stud like the Mantelriemen

    here an overview of straps

the upper one is a A-frame mess kit strap

the middle one is a normal mess kit strap

the lower one is a equipment strap (Mantelriemen) (they normally don't fit around mess kits)

you can easily spot the difference is length

Thank you Tom, that helps a lot now I know what to look for. Now I think I need a bread bag to go with them.
