I have been looking for a tornister and I was wondeins ig if this is something that is regularly faked or reproduced. I would like to know what I should be looking for when I'm trying to determine if one is real or not. I tried to put some pictures up of one I was looking at but they uploaded small. Any tips would be very helpful.

To the best of my knowledge these 1930's/ WW2 era packs are not reproduced? So you are fairly safe. They are not that popular with many collectors.

    Cheers, Ade.

I wonder why? I think the horse/mule hair is neat because it is different from anything the Allies had in the 20th century. I have a friend who has one a 3rd Army veteran gave him. He took it from a Luftwaffe ground unit soldier they took prisoner. The man sent the pack, a helmet, one k98 pouch and a pair of luftwaffe flight boots back to his wife. When the Luftwaffe soldier found out that he was sending his stuff to the US the POW gave him a picture of himself to go along with it. He has everything I'll get some photos

Please post some pics, that would be great!

I like these packs. I think half the trouble is that because they were not worn in actual combat, that is what puts some collectors off them? Still it keeps them at a fair price. Which is good for those of us with taste I have shown mine on the forum in the past.

The Swiss Army wore a similar pack, which some people have mistakenly bought as German before now. That is one thing to bear in mind.

    Cheers, Ade.

Ok thanks for telling me that there is one on ebay right now that I bet is swiss because it has a different set of straps on it. I also have a neat little book that I am currently trying to translate that is about a soldiers gear. I think it was something for children to help them understand the war but it has a poem about how important a soldiers boots, his shovel, and his tornister is. I'll scan that tonight.

I will go over tis weekend to get pictures of my friends collection but until then here is the poem about field equippment from the book I mentioned. The book is dated 1942 and I have not translated it so I kno nothing about it. I got it with a large group of photos, death cards, and newspapers. There are three pages but because the text is unreadable I only scanned the cover and the 1st page. The entire thing reads...

    Die treuen Begleiter

    Der Helm

Was ist mein helm?

    Tornister halt,
    was einer braucht im Feld.
    Hemd, Strumpfe, Buch,
    dem Krieger ist’s genug.
    Der Krieger Haßt
    nichts tiefer als Ballast.
    Wer Kampft, ermißt,
    wie wenig notig ist.
    Wie leicht es sei,
    so recht zu warden frei.
    Tornister mein,
bist Haus mir, Bett und Schrein

    Der Brotbeutel

    Brotbeutel, wenn ich dich nur habe;

Weiß wohl, was ich dir schulde,
    du Spaten grubst die Mulde,
    darin ich sicher lag,
    wenn heiße Hagel klirrten,
    wenn Eisenvogel schwirrten
    mit scharfem Flugelschlag.
    Du gibst dem Kameraden,
    den Gott zu sich geladen,
    begrunten Hugel mit.
    Du lockerst ihm die Erde,
dab ihm zu schwer nicht werde
    das Land, das er erstritt.

    Die Stiefel

    Ihr Stiefel zurnt dem Staub,
    ihr grollt dem morschen laub,
    vom ewigen Regen klamm,
    habt ihr den Fruhjahrsschlamm.
    Euch tut die Kalte weh,
    der Nagelkopfe blind.
    Und dennoch tretet ihr,
    viel Straßen betet ihr,
    und dennoch schreitet ihr,
    viel Lander weitet ihr,
Liegt Tau und Blut im Feld,
    ihr wandert um die Welt,
    liegt Fremde auch voraus,
    ihr wandert stets nach Haus.

    Das Zelt

    Mein Wanderdach, du graues Zelt,
darauf der Schnee und Regen fallt!
Schirmst mich vor Kalte und vor Wind,
bist mutterarm und ich bin Kind.
Bist nachts ein Stuck der Heimat fern:
    im Giebel steht der Siebenstern.
    Schirmst mich vor Mittagssonnenglut,
am First ein goldner Falter ruht.
    Und ist mein Erdendienst erfullt,
dann wird mein Leib von dir umhullt.
Mein letzter Hauch den Falter tragt
ins Land, wo mein Herz weiterschlagt.

I don't know exactly what it says but the pictures of the field gear are interesting so I figured I would share.
