The gates of hell were opened and we accepted the invitation to enter" 26/880 Lance Sgt, Edward Dyke. 26th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers , ( 3rd Tyneside Irish )

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader
House Carles at the Battle of Hastings
Not really studying the SS Nord much as yet, why were they in so much of a hurry to dispose of all their SS identification items, very few Heer items have been found I am told?
Being in the northern part of the front they might have expected to be taken prisoners, and being a SS soldier you would most likely not make it to the POW camp. I don't think they had too many places to go. Like in the southern/central parts, many managed to escape to the sectors controlled by the western forces. Read about the Halbe encirclement. Even in the western controlled sector SS soldiers was gunned down. Danish Freikorps Danmark soldiers have told about such incidents. The Soviets was much worse though.
I was not aware the SS Nordland fought at Karelia, i thought it was the 6th SS Mountain Division "Nord", as i have said, i really am not up to speed on this yet !
Nordland didn't fight in Karelia it was only Nord and the Norwegian SS Ski Jager Btl . It has nothing to do with being shot out of hand and more to do with the the fact that when the Finns came out of the War in 1944 the whole of the 20 Gebirgs Armee including SS Nord were forced to conduct a fighting retreat from Karelia through Northern Norway to Narvik whilst in contact with their former Finnish allies and comrades in arms , quite a feat as the withdrawal was about 1500 kms in total most of it on foot for the Infantry units as much equiptment was left behind hence the amount of equipment found dumped in lakes by Nord or the Russsians . Maxim can tell you more about that.
If you want to learn about Nord in Karelia a good book is Black Edelweiss written by a Nord Veteran,
cheers
Paul
