    Yes.

    Really these were designed to mark areas contaminated by gas.

    No it is for gas warning, plenty of threads about these. Popular collector misconception that they were for minefields.

    Welcome to the forum Estland. As stated above, these flags were used to mark areas where dangerous gas was present.

    Indeed, it was purposely added to terrify those below. A simple flick of the switch by the pilot and that sound would blare out as the plane dived towards its target.
