I want to show you a matchbox i recently acquired.
I think it is silver and the top has an area supposed to strike matches on, but the friction is long gone in the material.
It has the finnish lion, but I am not sure if the lion is applied later.
A russian friend says the design is similar to german match boxes he found when digging in russia.
This one has very little stamps in the bottom.
Has anyone seen these before, any information someone?

    Big thanks in advance

Hi laplander , do you think this has been ground dug ? i would not say that this is trench art with the assay / maker indentification marks stamped on it ! can you give a better close up of the stamped marks ?
    cheers Al

    Hello Al.
    Thank you for your reply.
I do not think this is ground dug at all.
It has a few markings in the bottom which I cant really catch on photo.
First is a stilistic "F" within a diamond, It could also be a flying bird.
Next is an "M" within a diamond.
I bought this matchbox at an online auction and the seller had very little info to give.
The finnish lion imply a connection to finland.
I am swedish and Finland has always been our close neighbour.
Some swedes fought and died with the finns when Russia attacked Finland.
I dont think this matchbox necessarily has been in combat.
The design is nearly identical to some boxes dug in russia(german bunkers/trenches)
The connection between finland and germany springs to mind with lots of german gear beeing used during the war.
Sorry for the bad pictures and thanks again for your reply.

    Best regards

Hi Laplander I dont think that the lion is Finnish it could be a german countys coat of arms , As we did have a large number of german troops in Finnish lapland

    Hello
It seems to be swedish box. The coat of arms seems to be Gothenbugs city coat of arms. Finnish coat of arms is totally different. Picture included.

Thanks Franz Repper and Kaly for replying to this thread.
I think Kala is right about this coat of arms belonging to the city of Gothenburg.
This forum really has members with sharp eyes and minds.
The matchbox is swedish and I should be able to find the maker if I find a good site interpreting the stamps in the bottom of the box.

    Best regards
