Re: Rural police clamshell
Most of the damage, as far as I could determine, was done by someone trying to take it appart but was not very successful. As a result the hilt was loose, so the 'fixer' packed it in epoxy or some fiberglass resin to hold it all together. He had managed to remove one rivet and subsequently tossed in the towel and sold it for what he could get. It finally ended up at a gunshow where I picked it up for $250. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of the 'before' condition. It took some time to remove all that resin which had covered the entire hilt including the clamshell. I would imagine that the 'fixer' really went to town remaniscent of a toddler who got ahold of a honey jar. Even the blade was partially covered.
The repair included removing all that resin from the hilt and reassembling it, reinstalling the rivets. The scabbard leather needed to be refinished as well. The frog may be postwar, I am not too sure about that, and the knot is original unused period left over.
