Officers rank stars

A question has come up on one of the other forums I post on.

Everything I have ever read, seen, or heard is that the rank stars for junior, and field grade officers were cast brass. senior officer rank insignia was silver, and Marshall's wore gold.

In an effort to verify my information, is this correct?

If not, what is correct, and what source can I check to verify the information?

Small stars - Junior officers - one stripe on the shoulderboard. Silvered - for "combat" personel. Gold - for technical/administrative personel.

Large stars - Senior officers - two stripes on the shoulderboard. Same applies for silvered/gold regulation.

I'm not up on Marshals - but this information, as the above is, and much more is contained in an excellent reference printed in Soviet times, later translated into English.
