If the piece is bad, request that customs return the piece to the sender. Inform the merchant of the problem and you are requesting that it be returned to him. Many years ago, I bought what turned out to be a fake gray SS officer cap. I immediately contacted the seller in Germany and he told me to send it back. It was held up in customs for over a year before it was returned to me. No refund and I had a piece of ka-ka. A reinactor bought it from me for far less than I paid for it.
