Ok Guys - destroy my hopes...

Here we have a large pennant - it measures 63 inches x 29 inches.

The swastika measures 14 inches across and is a separate piece of material to the circular white background on either side.

As can be seen from the photographs, the swastikas on either side are perfectly aligned (but obviously the other way round.)

The circular section of red background has been removed behind the white roundel.

The stitching on parts of the pennant are 'double stitched' (according to the wife!).

There are a couple of tears/rips which have been badly repaired - see photos.

I know it's provenance back to the 1960's and am told it was brought back to the UK in 1946.

As far as I can see there are no manufacturers markings.

    Is it genuine?

    Thanks

With provenance back that far, you should have no concerns about period originality. In 1946, Germans were using what ever cloth was available for necessities. Flags were every where so there was no market to fake them. Nice period original piece and welcome to the forum.

Thank's for all of the comments.

I'm delighted that it is genuine, as there appear to be more fakes for sale than real ones!

Does anyone have any idea what it would have been used for?

As it is so large, I can only guess that it would hang downwards from a building or special hangar attached to a flagpole?

I have searched online and cannot find another of this size, even with specialist dealers.

    Thanks again.

No particular purpose-just, as you said, hanging from a building or railing or some such to show patriotic pride and support-perhaps for an event or rally of some sort like a government official making a stop in their town, etc. Much like modern flags of today come in all sizes and shapes as well. It's a nice banner!
