Gotcha. Because, In one of your pics, it looks like the flag itself was burnt.

Out of curiosity, what is the outcome you're looking for when burning the tread?

Cotton and Wool burn slower and cleaner. More modern fabrics like polyester, nylons and many of the blends burn quickly,smell distinctly chemically and burn into small black melted ball shapes.

Polyester and another modern fabrics are oïl by-product.
Burn fast and melt like a plastic bag.
