Controversial buckles

Just thought to bump up a great month of very nice buckles..
My question is this.. ?? Are there many questionable WW 2 buckles that defy explanation
as to maker or process of manufacturing ?? I am sure there are examples to be posted..
This is not limited to any branch.. Just oddities or unknown types of construction.
I will start here... Please post as time permits.. G

This buckle was listed as a "Combat" RAD buckle.. The aluminum construction would not have been sufficient to last in combat.. Any other plausible ideas'.. G

Where is said this is a "combat"- buckle, GWAR?

I cannot find anything about a RAD-buckle, which is "brüniert" (burnished)
in the RAD-Verordnungsblatt. But that won't say they were not made, but for
what reason? Some explanation about procecures: maybe it was done to have the
buckle look as "altsilberfarbig". There were manufacturer's who made them
accordingly as so-called Dienstschloss, or as Extra-Schloss. To get
this color-tone, one had to "color" the upper deeper parts and clean them (die
Vertiefungen des geprägten Koppelschlosses wurden eingefärbt und abgewischt).

The shown buckle is an "extra" buckle and not a combat buckle. It would not hold
the weight for a full pack of equipment. To hold anyway some weight these buckles
were "vergütet", which is hardened (aushärten)!

The procedure "Brünieren" is done with salt, known as "Brüniersalz", and
coocked (in a sort of bath). Maybe the salt composition caused it is darker then was
planned. It was done to avoid shining of the lighter metal. This procedure was also
done to avoid corrosion!
Occasionally extra-buckles (but also other buckles) were coated with "Zapon",
a colorless lacquer, to avoid colouring of the metal (anlaufen der Ware). The
Zapon cannot have caused the darker color as after years this can only cause a
very, very light yellowish tone!

One should note that a so-called Dienstschloss could hold a weight of 100 kg. without
any remodelling of the box and prongs; an Extraschloss could hold only 40-50 kg.,
no more even when the material was hardened!!

Wartime or post-war painted? This is up to GWAR. He can see this in a few seconds with some inventiveness!
