If I recall correctly they were forward elements setting up on the south bank.

I'd say they were preparing defensive positions. The officer seems to be pointing out something about the field of fire to the machine-gunner.

Most likely. But for their sake, perhaps he pointing to a couple of Russian women soldiers taking a bath.
