I am reminded of the tremendous loss of Barbarossa by this haunting portrait from my collection of Gefrieter Walter Koch who, from his date of death, likely died during the Russian counteroffensive. According to the collector who translated the difficult Sutterleinschrift, the place were he was born is likely "Plattenhardt" somewhat south of Stuttgart.
Hand-writen on the reverse of this one is 'Stuka-attack on the Isthmus of Crimea, Sept.41'....
