Article about: I was wondering what the "SP" stands for on his greatcoat. I am pretty sure it does not stand for "Shore Patrol"

Hi Ade - The answer might have lied in there, but it was hiding! I saw lots of "SP" patches, but no explanation what "SP" actually stands for. Speer something, I guess. I see my "old buddy" Greg put his $2 worth in there, too. Must be one of his last transmissions... I wish I could see the emblem on that helmet better. Any ideas what it is like? Possibly some sort of OT emblem...

Hi Bob, yes the "SP" stands for Speer.

The helmet is a Luftwaffe lid.

    Cheers, Ade.

I THOUGHT it looked like Luftwaffe, but Luftwaffe und OT? Never heard of it. Thanks Ade.

You guys are quick on the draw. I was about to mention that to me-the decal on his helmet looks like it could have been Luftwaffe related-but that his Shoulderboards were not Luft related but his collartabs are of the Luft, KM, Waffen and Allgemeine SS and Forestry style.

Thanks for saving me as already placing my foot into my mouth and making a mistake already ;-))

Hi Bob, I think he would have been wearing this Luftwaffe decaled helmet due to his unit being attatched to the Luftwaffe? The two other Bob's (Coleman and Hritz) might be alble to tell you more. This is not a subject I know much about.

    Cheers, Ade.

The individual is a member of one of the NSKK Transport Brigade Speer units attached to the Luftwaffe. The Speer units were also attached to the Heer and also served independently. The organization originally fell under the direction of Dr. Fritz Todt until his death in an airplane crash. Reichsminister Albert Speer was then given total control of the complete organization. These unit provided secondary transportation for the military and also were involved in transporting plunder back to the Reich.
The insignia of these organizations changed several times. A good reference has never been produced likely due to a lack of interest. The man in question appears to be wearing the standard pattern NSKK shoulder strap for other ranks. These were later changed to a pattern similar to those worn by the various military units.
