And to think only a few years later those same carefully tended graves would be raided for firewood and bulldozed or dug up. I've read somewhere that after Soviet liberation of their captured territory that German cemeteries would be dug up and the bones crushed for use in fertilizer, anyone heard any story like this?
Many German cemeteries were destroyed by variuos means that i suspect was one of them.

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

Sobering photo's of the war on the eastern front.
I wonder if their folks ever knew what happened to those guys.
I talked to a Russian girl in Joplin Missouri several times. She said her family didn't know where her grandfathers and uncles were killed or buried they just never came home after the war.

New photographs! Made during the Великая Отечественная война (Great Patriotic War). Alot of high ranking officers this time (even a Hero of the Soviet Union!). Definitely used for propaganda.
