That soldat must have been a pretty weird guy to not only take personal photos of those men, but to add captions as well. They are interesting photos, though, since they are so early. June 23rd happens to be my birthday as well!
The simple descriptive caption on the first photo does not bother me too much - although I don't think I would have photographed that scene when passing by - but the second one (clearly written by a different man; I don't think this photo is from the same source as the other two) makes one wonder.
What does it imply? A heroic opponent who kept fighting to his last breath and took bullet after bullet before he finally went down? Or a defenseless prisoner who had begged for his life and was murdered?

Indeed it's the 1st or the 2nd. Unfortunately we will never find out.

Early Barbarossa albums and photos are littered with similar photos in fact most of those i have seen have KIA photos in them, for many of the troops in action for the first time and witnessing such events they wanted to record it , as the war went on and the experience of violent death became commonplace for the troops these type of photos are seen less and less ( Same applied to the 1940 French campaign ) so not really weird at all Mo.

Taking photos of enemy dead is still a common occurence in all Armies even today !!

    Some gruesome images Dean.

Here is a Panzer Oberschutze with both variants of the Reiterabzeichen.
(I have concerns with the originality of this portrait to be honest, but maybe Im just getting too paranoid these days. The serrated cut is what concerns me, as i cannot match it with any other examples in my collection)

In any case, a nice portrait; although, come to think of it: Hand in his pocket... His Feldwebel wouldn't approve!

By the way, only the badge on the left is called a Deutsches Reiterabzeichen; the one on the right is the Deutsches Fahrerabzeichen.

    Superb image Bill.

I like the non regulation piped feldmutze.

    Cheers, Ade.

haha I know, I noticed the hand in the pocket as well Andreas! A definite no-no, even these days! thanks for the clarification on the fahrerabzeichen as well.

Youre right Ade! I overlooked that somehow. Its not even a correct Officer/nco cap (if thats the look he was going for), as the officer/nco feldmutze had piping near the crown and bullion cockade, right?

Hi Bill, only officers caps had silver piping to the crown and turn up.

This is an enlisted mans cap and has the addition of pink waffenfarbe piping around the turn up. Very non regulation and not so often seen. So the Feldwebel would have plenty to talk to this man about...

These non regualtion piped caps tend to be seen early war. I have seen Luftwaffe caps with this too.

    Cheers, Ade.
