I'm not convinced it is a Para badge, I can't see it from the profile of the eagle. Wouldn't flight crew be wearing yellow collar tabs?
Hey Adrian, yes they should be yellow. These litzen seem to be a darker color. If red, he could be a Luftwaffe flak crew?
About the badge, it doesn't look like a flak badge to me.

This is a difficult one, and I cannot offer a 100% certain ID, but there is a good possibility that these are pre-war Landwehr personnel.

During the years of 1936 to 1939, older reservists of the Landwehr (i.e. the second-line supplementary reserves) were called up for duty in temporarily-raised Landwehr units where they underwent training and took part in military exercises. Some such units were also mobilized for border security duties during the crisis situations of 1938/39.

Good call HPL! I think your explanation is a very good one. It would make the most sense. I just thought it was odd that there wasnt ANY insignia! Even the officer to the middle-right, the only way to know that he is an officer is by his belt buckle! I wouldnt call it a rare photo, just an unusual one, at an unusual time!

Adrian, that was the reason why I was hesitant to put Fallschirmjager badge in my description, because I just dont know what it is! Out of all the luft badges that I know of, it resembles the Para badge and ever so slightly the air gunner badge (only because of the wing/etc). You are correct tho, that the strange thing is that the tabs are not light in color. They appear to be similar to Flak tabs or ground division tabs. ?? But the badge doesnt seem to be a flak or Ground assault badge tho either. I wish the pic was clearer, because this one doesnt make sense to me. The only other tab I can think of that would make sense would be the Luftnachtrichtentruppe (qualified radio operator) Tab (like a dark orange/brown color)?? Maybe a radio operator badge before the air gunner badge was instituted???

BTW Chris, awesome photos! Another shot of the B34 schulterklappen!
