Not sure what the back says, but Frankreich is written, so we know it's somewhere in France.

I feel like this SS group photo warrants its own post. I love the casual nature of it, and the glow of happy times it exudes. Judging by the SS helmets which show the party shield, we know this was likely taken early if not pre war. Definitely one of my favorites in my collection.

    It says:

    "Kriegsjahr 1939/1940
    bei Schloß Mainsberg / Frankreich
    19./20. Januar 1940
    "

    ["War year 1939/1940
    near Castle Mainsberg / France
    19/20 January 1940"]

I can't find anything about a castle Mainsberg, but this is surely just a slight misspelling of castle Meinsberg (German name for Malbrouck) in Lorraine, which is located by the German border.
(It has to be: January 1940 was during the "Phoney War" period; France wouldn't be invaded until May.)

Judging by the uniforms and insignia, I would say it is an early war photo.
(By the way, note the train visible in the background. This is probably a troop train during a stopover at some railway station en route.)

That's it, indeed! The building in the background is the Justitiepaleis / Palais de Justice.

Another observation: The photograph of the tour group standing by the stalagmite in post # 52 was taken in the Hermannshöhle at Rübeland in the Harz region.

Nice early photo , when you see them from this period you wonder what was the fate that awaited them !

The photo of the street quoted in post #55 was one I was excited to get. Those photos that capture an every day moment like that of the street offer a great window into the past. There's no obvious subject in the photo the camera is pointing to, letting the viewer seek out whatever interests them from first glance. One could be looking out of the window of a coffee shop on that street and see the exact same sight. That said, I had no idea where the photo was taken. Thanks for identifying that for me guys!

I took a look at the rear of the photo, and it does have writing on the back.

Thanks HPL for the translations you provided! As always, you bring clarity to all the photos you comment on. Much appreciated sir.

And sure enough, it says "Lehmann / Brüssel / Justizpalast".
