Default What are these SS men up to?

I just won this photograph on eBay and I can't work out what these soldiers are all about. They're wearing a combination of what looks like grey and black uniforms, with 2nd pattern totenkopf cap insignia but early political eagles, I think? One wields a stick like a weapon, another like a tool. Any help would be appreciated as to when/where/what this photograph is about!

    Thanks!

Maybe something to do with Krystalnacht or similar event, wrecking stuff by the look of it.

Interesting suggestion Bond, that'd make it quite an important photo if that's the case; and Nick, of course, I forgot that the SS were in the habit of doing that

Wooden sticks could be axes. Looks like woodchip and bark on the ground. Collecting firewood maybe. But officers?

Am thinking Jerry is close on it. Looks like they are clearing debris of some sort-but fairly cheerfully, if nothing else, so it must have been Good debris... Can't imagine why Officers would be doing it, otherwise. Course, then again...the guy on the top-third from the left does Not look very cheerful...hmm...Maybe He's the one that Made the mess..

Hi Robbie, that is a superb image.

I doubt it will be Krystalnacht, as the pic does not look like it was taken in November, it looks too sunny.

I would suggest they are on some kind of training exercise? The sheet they are holding is a Zeltbahn.

No officers there, just enlisted and very junior NCO's.

    Cheers, Ade.

Cracking image Robbie. That chap at the back is a bit "hello sailor" though isn't he?

Haha! To me he looked like an attacking Nazi zombie...

And thanks Ade! Good point about the November thing; do you have any idea when the photo would have been taken, though? I mean, the combination of second pattern totenkopfs and political eagles can't have lasted that long. Plus.. why are some wearing black and others not? (pardon my lack of education :/)

    Thanks,

    Robbie

Maybe they are just looking, when other workers outside the photo have gathered wood for a midsummers fest or similar... Nice photo.
