Here is an interesting piece of trench art relating to Luftwaffe Jagdflieger and Eichenlaub winner Oberleutnant Hans Beisswenger.

He flew with Jagdgeschwader 54 and recorded 152 victories in 500 combat missions before being killed in action on 6/3/1943 in aerial combat over Staraya Russa.

The piece was made as a commemorative item from a brass shell casing with brass Knights Cross attached by his ground crew. The photo seems to have been covered in some sort of resin which set hard.

    Hi Paul,

Nice piece. That cross reminds me one one that I have. Being similar, it is brass with a gloss black painted center and affixed to a wooden box by way of a threaded screw and washer. The back is marked DRGM.

Thanks guys the interesting thing about Beisswenger is that when he died he was at the top of the scoring re Luftwaffe aces , if he had fought until the end of the war how many would he have had ?

Could the resin be aircraft dope. i thought some parts of the bf109 were still fabric covered, rudder ,elevators, spring to mind and would have needed doping to make the fabric taut.
