Whats the final verdict on this hat, French hat used by the russians ? or issued later?

Well, using a 20x magnifying glass, it is obvious that the hat is the same as in the photos. The photos are actual wartime photos from the familiy, so it must be wartime, of French manufacture.

Why would France be sending/supplying the Soviets with anything at this time? They just had the Germans kicked out of their territory in late 1944 and anybody would assume that the state of everything in that country was quite the debacle.

If I may inquire; Did you acquire this from the family? Or, from a dealer, another collector, or worst yet, eBay?

In any case, and of the utmost importance: If you are completely satisfied with it and it's alleged provenance, then so be it.

Is there not the probability that the Soviets acquired the hat as they pushed towards Germany and slapped their insignia on it? It would be a reasonable substitute for a cossack type hat if regulations were not too strict about the Soviet soldier wearing it.

The Soviet Red Army acquired it (and the three others) during their "push" though France?

No, I did not say the Soviet Army went into france. I swear this is comedy night here. Perhaps it was taken from France or purchased there by Germans during the occupation and then taken from Germans by Soviets. Things change hands easily as the battle lines and victors change.

I acquired it directly from the US vet's son, along with several photos, and a few other personal possessions. I am 100% satisfied with it's providence, as far as being traded from a Russian soldier in Austria in the last stages of WWII. How the Soviets obtained it is a mystery.

The Russian cossack could pick up this item somewhwer in Hungary, Czech or Poland and wore it as a cossacks cap. Surely the above left is original examples on the picture
But yours is unfortunately does not connect to the Red Army
