Ushanka Hats Wartime? or Post-war?

Article about: Hi, here are 2 Ushankas. I know condition is poor. They are cheap, and they can be fixed a little bit, and orig. stars I have can be added for display. Of course the question I have for the

Default UPDATED PICS Re: Ushanka Hats Wartime? or Post-war?

The first Ushanka I showed pics of at start of thread has arrived. I have taken some more photos, and added a star that I had. There was already a small hole where it is mounted, so just stuck the prongs through that hole.

This hat does not have fish fur, it has real sheepskin/wool. The fabric also seems to be wool, and not brushed cotton. Is this odd for a "other ranks" Ushanka?

This hat is one of my favorite items now. Just something about it. I wish it could talk to me. Although I wish that with all my stuff.

I did not wet it or steam it, just put it on the dummy head. It seems to have a better shape now.

Hi Pondboss, No I really do not think so......the experts have not questioned the country of origin. I feel fairly confident that this one, (this last one shown with Red star added) is a wartime Soviet made Ushanka. I did not purchase the other moth eaten one.

I wish the "experts" would ring in again about the new details I have posted about this Ushanka, since being able to examine in hand, and close up.

I think this is an odd Ushanka to have real sheepskin/fur, and it also seems to be wool, not brushed cotton like most common ranks hats.

    Steve,

Your ushanka is still probably an "other ranks"/EM hat. Wool bodies are not terribly uncommon. The lambs wool is more uncommon, but not unheard of. I wouldn't do a thing to it except maybe find a crappy, enamel chipped star for it.

Hi Mike, OK, here is crappiest star I have. It looks better. Maybe not even a wartime star, not sure. I will keep an eye open for a more beat up one.

Even though it may be a junk hat to some, and compared to your hats........I still like it.

    Thanks for the help.
