    Adam,

I do not like the paint at all! I noticed these M4/44 Heer buckles in different conditions from time to time but no one came along with such a thick paint if I remember right!

    Best,
    Guido

    Richard & Guido,

Thanks for the replies and thoughts. I must say I am very confused about the paint on this buckle... I tried the acetone test but no paint came off. I am somewhat ignorant of the science here... How old does the paint have to be to not come off with the acetone test? I have seen varying degrees of paint application on buckles but this does seem very thick. There are a couple points of wear on the front and back that seem suggest that the paint is not brand new.

    Any further thoughts most appreciated.

    Best,
    Adam

A tad embarrassed... I see now after a quick bit of research that the science here is a fairly straightforward matter of oil-based paint versus post-1945 introduction of water-based acrylic/latex paint which should be removed through the acetone test. Still I suppose buckles could always be re-painted with an oil-based paint that might pass the non-foolproof acetone test. Perhaps more of a paint smell with acrylic/latex vs. oil-based?

    Best,
    Adam

    Hello Adam,

According to my knowledge it was based on nitro-baking.

    Thus they were solvent resistant.

I actually like the paint and for me quite normal for this maker, if you enlarge the pictures and examine the chips in the buckles I can see no other colour showing through, I have also seen alot of these buckles like this. Bruder Schneider buckles had the same thing with them, a thick layer of paint on them and you also seen quite a few with paint "run marks" on them. Just MO
