Flares with the uniform??

can anyone explain why flares would be strapped to Luft leg? in case of a shoot down? from Mollo's book

seems like they would get in the way of an quick exit/ and or with rounds coming in, might go off. ...but, of course, I wasn't there..much appreciate reply..ty
