General's DAK (tropical) cap

Article about: Hi, I was wondering if anyone can confirm/deny that general officers in north africa wore tropical field caps (M41 or M42) with gold piping/buttons, or did they just wear the standard cap? T

I did a quick google translation, and I beleive the language is Malay(?). I noticed Rommels tunic as well. The Generalmajor with him is Stefan Fröhlich. I also noticed the officer with the missing arm. As for Rommel, I have seen pictures of him wearing a tropical greatcoat with red lapels...another rarity to be sure...

Over on the Marshals Baton website they have General der Fallschirmtruppe Ramcke’s Tropical Uniform which includes a nice tropical field cap, albeit for the Luftwaffe.

Hi Jerry, that is a nice looking cap, nice long peak as it should be, did this cap come with any insignia? Or traces of any? Yes It well could be a tailor made cap and be original period item. Have you not showed it to someone like our Stonemint ?

By the way you have a wonderful collection of caps and hats.

    Regards SK
I long ago gave up making any claims for this cap.

Thanks for the comment about my collection.
    Regards,

    Jerry

    Whatever its just an opinion.

    Hello,

Here are some pics of a DAK tropical generals hat from my collection,

The color of the fabric is a little different than other hats in my collection.

The hat is in awesome condition, it has seen some wear which is evident from small stains in the leather sweatband.

Wow, that is an awesome cap. Do you know who owned it? Quite a rare find indeed!

I don't know anything about the cap except that it was part of the Van Norden collection.

I bought the hat plus a dozen other at an auction in the US.. Mr. Van Norden was a big collector of German small arms and Class III machine guns. He had literally dozens of fully functioning arms, Mg-34's, MG -42's, a half a dozen MP44's, MP40's, he even had a MKb 42 and a MP44 with a Krummlauf Curved Barrel and Optical Sighting Device, Plus an amazing headgear and uniform collection. If i lived in the USA i would have bought some of his machine guns!

I own a few deactivated blank firing small arms, MP 40, MP 38 and a deko MP 44, it would be awesome to own fully functioning arms for reenactments and shooting watermelons, but alas.. not permitted where i live :-(

I was really lucky and seemed to be the only person interested in the hats and uniforms for sale at the auction..

    Hi Becks,

Have to agree with Doug awesome. The Generals are just soooo rare, you was very lucky indeed to be the only person interested in these items.
If you ever decide to sell it please contact me first. Thank you.

Hi Becks, like I said, awesome cap. I am curious in that it appears to have an officer-style (non general officer) eagle as opposed to a gold version usually attributed to officers of this rank, or at least a metal gold eagle. I guess all manner of possibilities could be realized due to shortages, supply, etc.

    Doug,

I have no idea.. I have scoured the web looking for additional examples of M40's for generals without success.

The hat is identical in construction to the Officers M40 that i have, with the exception of the fabric which is heavier and more of a rusty olive green color.

The eagle is zigzag sewn, factory applied and the hat has been worn, albeit sparingly, there are some small sweat stains in the leather sweatband.

Most of the other generals hats i have seen have been super bling bling.. I guess in the desert one would want something more practical.

How many generals served in DAK? it would be great to know their hat sizes! so as to narrow down the list and guess the owner.

    Doug,

What a list! Even if you could narrow it down to individuals with size 56, still a guessing game.

Is DAK your area of collection interest. I messaged Silberkreutz and mentioned that I might be interested in selling my DAK collection to the right collector and to the right price as DAK is not really my special interest. I just collect hats and have over 500 by now.. guess you could say i am just a filthy hoarder.. :-)

    Cheers
