Help required identifying and valuing a small collection

Article about: Very good advice. The lithuanian Shield is the only one I have but I do have multiples of several other volunteer shields; and Helmet Decals. I think it is only right to sell them in singles

Default Help required identifying and valuing a small collection

I have inherited a small collection of items from my father which I need to identify and estimate values for before I place them for sale. I would be grateful for any help that forum members can give me in this matter. There are several hundered items in total, all in unused condition, and all having been in storage since WW11.

I have numbered the items and photographed them from both sides. Many thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide. There will be a number of other threads in respect of other groupings.

Hi Andy, first things first, they are all original. I think you will be already aware of that, gieven that your Dad took them during the war, but I say it more of the benefit of other forum members looking at the thread.

    1) Krim sheild on Luftwaffe blue/grey backing.

    2 & 22) "Afrika" camapaign cuff title.

Both of the above are decorations for campaign service in the Crimea and North Africa. Everything else is insignia.

    3) NCO's Sleeve rank insignia. Three at top right are for females.

    4) Luftwaffe construction units breast eagle

    5 & 6) You have covered.

    7) Decals (transfers) for the steel helmet

    8) Croatian Foreign Volunteers arm insignia

    9) Italian Foreign Volunteers arm insignia

    10) Bulgarian Foreign Volunteers arm insignia

    12) Luftwaffe sports vest insignia

    13) Hitler Youth armband

    14) Luftwaffe flight/Para bandsmans shoulder swallows nests (Unfinished)

    15) Officers rank gilt pips for the shoulder boards. The rest are NCO's for the shoulder boards, school (LS) and instructional units (L).

    16) Luftwaffe NCO's metal cap cockade: the cloth ones for the field caps.

    17) Luftwaffe Pith helmet eagle

    18) Luftwaffe Other ranks and NCO's collar rank insignia

    19) Italian collar insignia

    20) Luft Medical NCO shoulder strap insignia

    21) Luft construction tie pin.

The other pics are repeated of items already id'ed..

    PHEW!

    Cheers, Ade.

Wow. I am so grateful for your efforts.

You certainly know your stuff Ade.

Huge thanks to you for that.

At least it gives me a starting point.

I now have desciptions I can use to hunt down some valuations.

I suspect I should leave it for a day or two before I post the next lot.

    Cheers

    My pleasure.

Do them in smaller groups and I will tackle them.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Hi Andy,
I sent you a PM regarding one of the Afrika cufftitles. As for values, you may want to pick up Warman's World War II collectibles 2nd edition.

Also, dealer websites like Ruptured Duck and especially the Collector's Guild will give you an idea of value, however somewhat inflated so you will want to take that into account.

eBay may help, but any item with a swas would not be on there. Beware of buy it now's though as the majority of the time the asking price is ridiculous. Stay away from sites like ioffer and gunbroker as most of the items are fake so the asking prices are very low or too high.

As for the other items, no need to wait on posting them as others will help to identify and I'm sure like myself are looking forward to see them.

    Good luck in your endeavor!

    Hi Eric. pm replied to.

I found collectors guild earlier on. I am glad i was sitting down at the time and not looking to buy.

I am going to spend the weekend cataloqing and getting some idea of value. Even if they are dealer values at least i can discount them to something more realistic for genuine collectors.

I think the thing I am going to have problems with is the colar tabs. I think there are 60 or 70 in various colours/trims so i might post them next. There are also about 30 should tabs but as far as i can see all singles, but even so interesting if The collectors guild is to be believed

I have a question regarding item No 10 which has been identified as a Bulgarian Foreign Volunteers Arm Shield.

The only one I can trace on line has white where the yellow is on the one above and is not in an actual shield shape

"- Bulgarian sleeve insignia in bevo for Bulgarian nationals serving in the German Army. Technically Bulgarians serving in the Wehrmacht were not classified as foreign legion volunteers but as replacement personnel. The sleeve shield is machine woven in white, green and red."

    Were there two different types?

Nr. 10 is not Bulgarian but Lithuanian. I'm not an expert but most of such items I have seen are modern repros. But as I said - i'm not an expert.

    Thanks for your reply.

Fortunately I have no doubts on the authenticity of the item.

All of the items in the collection were brought back from Germany by my late father at the end of WW11 and have been in his or my possession ever since.

Thank you for clearing up the question of Bulgarian or not.

If You are sure it is pre 1945 - great find! I just wanted to mention that there are very often similar Lithuanian fakes for sell on ebay.de. So be careful! if You plan to sell Your collection I suggest to sell them per 1 item, not the whole lot together.
