Default Question concering a Calvary Tunic

    Hey guys,
Would a cavalry officer be rewarded with a General Assault badge or an Infantry Assault badge?

I am about to purchase a cavalry officers tunic and wondered what type of combat badge would be appropriate.

    Thanks!

If it has loops, measure the distance between them and that might help determine if the wearer had one or the other. Loops are placed according to the length of the pin to keep the badge in place.

Otherwise, depending on the criteria fulfilled, it could be either. Apparently, General Assault is more common. The man could have been transfered to a cav unit after having been awarded an assault badge, infantry or general.

Also, many cavalry units were reassigned as Panzer Grenadier units but retained the cavalry color as a tradition honor. So, in that case, even a Panzer Assault Badge in bronze would work.

Any of them. If he was in a Panzer unit and got the silver Panzer assault and was then transfered to a cav unit, or one using the cav Waffenfarbe.

Also, I presume if he were in an actual mounted cavalry unit that was attached to a Panzer division, he may have qualified for a silver panzer assault.

"The only German Army Cavalry Force, the East prussian 1 Kavallerie Division had been reorganized as a panzer division (the 24 Pz) in the homeland just a few weeks before. From 1939 to 1941, the German (mounted) cavalry had given already countless examples of how able it was speaking of mobility and combat capability in trackless (hard-to-travel) areas, during mud periods, on frozen roads and in high snow. It was at that time (for the time being) – with the appropiate supply – the only Army’s branch which could maintain its movility under the before mentioned conditions. Besides, to that Army’s branch also belonged the aufklarungsabteilungen (reconnoissance detachments) with its cavalry squadrons (reiterschwadron) together with a cyclist squadron (radfährschwadron) and one motorized heavy squadron (schwereschwadron) which by 1942 were worn out and were not match for the opposite fresh Soviet cavalry forces."

The Panzer Assault Badges would have been awarded to members of this unit...whether silver or bronze may have been a dilemma even for the those responsible for recommending the award.

Also, Ritterkreuzträger Erpo Freiherr von Bodenhausen Generalleutnant

This general received the PAB in Bronze in November 1940 as commander of Schutzen Regiment 8 that had been Kav Schutzen Rgt 9. Chances are that unit wore cavalry yellow.
