I have been offered this Heer dagger, which looks to be in amazing shape. More pics comming. The only problem area I can see is the 2 hanger bits are loose - should they be, as I have only seen stationary ones? Maker is A.W.Jr of Solingen.

Both brackets were originally tacked or brazed on. It looks as thought only
the top one has come loose IMO. ( 'AW Jr' = Anton Wingen Jr. )

More pics would be nice, as I cannot enlarge these photos. It looks good
except for the loose bracket, which could be repaired. Two things I see
raise concerns though - do I see a split hanger ring ? I'm thinking that
the rings on original scabbards were welded. Also, the crossguard
appears to be on a bit of a slant in the photos.

I think the suspension rings were first heated, slid into position and the whole quenched, thus clamping the suspension rings to the scabbard.

Well I got some more pics, and the hilt is cracked quite badly. Price is $240.

First off, this dagger has been apart as evidenced by the fact that the maker's mark is under the wreath and swastika, it should be on the other side. (the blade has been inserted reversed to what it should be). The rest of the dagger appears to be in okay condition, maybe a little dirty. The price is not outrageous, nor is it a steal. Handles do come up on e-bay occasionally.
    Hope this helps,
    Ralph.

I believe that a Heer dagger in excellent/undamaged condition
will be worth double - more like $450 to $550. The cost of the
portipee alone would be about $50 to $75.

At $240, you could find a nicer grip and a better scabbard and
still come out ok. I wonder if they would take $200........?

    Steve.

I would not buy it, the blade has been sanded (see the scratching from the grip to the tip), grip is cracked, and scabbard ring has an issue,....in fact you buy a piece that will need a future upgrade.
Your money will be stuck in this piece course its in fact not that good and i will be hard to sell.
my advice: save your money and buy a decent piece, in the future you will not have problems selling it.

    Cheers,
    Ger

My advice would be the same: save up for a better example.

    Cheers, Ade.

Thanks guys. I passed on it and bought a SD Luft instead! Thanks for the pointers for future purchases.
