Luftschutz helmet

I recently acquired this helmet and being fairly uninformed was curious who would have worn it during the war. What would have been their role in the war? And what was the time frame?

Just my opinion of course... The Swaz has been rubbed or scraped off... Typical after the war... Perhaps and however.. These decals were flakey and it may just be due to age.. G
